Contemporary Art

After an awesome tour through the new Bay Lake Tower Resort, one of the most impressive parts was the art used throughout the resort’s rooms.  Here are a few examples from the areas we were able to tour.

Bou-Tiki Scavenger Hunt

Posted by Ashley Rae on May 16, 2009

A fun thing to do when the sun is getting the best of you in the Magic Kingdom or you are getting a late start in your day as a Guest at the Polynesian, is to stop over at the Bou-Tiki in Disney’s Polynesian Resort.  If you ask a Host, they will give you a tour of the tiki statues that adorn the area.  Unfortunately, during my last trip to the Polynesian, they were out of scavenger hunt materials.  So instead I took my own photo hunt.Tiki Statues

M.C. Illions Supreme Carousel

Posted by Ashley Rae on May 7, 2009

gedc1875Disney’s BoardWalk Inn displays many treasures reminiscent of the old boardwalks of the northeast.  Displayed in the lobby is a scaled model of an M.C. Illions Supreme Carousel.  M.C. Illions or Master Carver Marcus Charles Illions was known for his beautiful carousels that he created in the early 1900s.  Following the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing began to change and mass production was the key to success.  When M.C. Illions wanted to keep producing his handcrafted carousels, he started his own business named M.C. Illions & Sons.  He started the “Supreme Carousel Series” and planned to sculpt three extraordinary carousels.  Unfortunately, the cost of the carousels was too much for the company and after the third was completed it was sent off and is the most intact of the three to this day.  This 1927 Illions Supreme Carousel is currently in storage and waiting for a buyer from Brass Ring Entertainment.M.C. Illions Supreme Carousel

There is replica of one of Illions Supreme Carousels at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn which comes alive about every 20 minutes and plays Fantasy in the Sky.  Fantasy in the Sky is a retired fireworks show that played over Cinderella’s Castle in The Magic Kingdom.  The show was retired in 2003 and replaced by Wishes, but Fantasy in the Sky returns every December 30 & 31 and July 3 & 4 during special holiday fireworks.  The carousel does not play the entire show but ends during “Part of That World” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid

Supreme Carousel Ornament

In addition, a cast of an ornament from Illions Supreme Carousel can be found further down the hall toward the bathrooms.  The cast was made from a 1910 carousel and would be found surrounded my mirrors on an actual carousel.

I throughly enjoy that two artifacts from M.C. Illions exist within Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and plan to feature more antiques later on.  Also, a special thanks to Matt from Disneyana World for helping with this awesome find.
